Intro to Wildlife
Intro to Hands‑On Care — Level 1 is WRAPT’s foundational practical training course designed for new and emerging wildlife carers who are ready to begin learning the essential skills of safe, ethical, and effective wildlife rehabilitation. This entry‑level program builds confidence, capability, and understanding by introducing participants to the core principles of hands‑on care for the species most commonly encountered in our region.
Course Overview
Participants will gain a structured introduction to the practical aspects of wildlife care, focusing on three prominent groups within WRAPT’s rescue and rehabilitation work:
Macropods — including joeys, sub‑adults, and common rescue scenarios
Possums — safe handling, containment, and early‑stage care
Birds — initial assessment, stabilisation, and species‑appropriate support
The course covers the fundamentals of wildlife behaviour, stress reduction, safe handling techniques, basic husbandry, and the early rehabilitation steps required to support an animal from rescue through to transfer to an experienced carer or higher‑level facility.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of Level 1, trainees will be able to:
Identify common species and understand their basic behavioural needs
Apply safe, low‑stress handling and containment techniques
Perform initial assessments and recognise when an animal requires urgent veterinary care
Understand WRAPT’s care standards, Code of Practice requirements, and the responsibilities of hands‑on carers
Support experienced carers by confidently assisting with routine tasks and early‑stage rehabilitation
Who This Course Is For
This training is ideal for new members, volunteers transitioning from support roles, and anyone wishing to begin their journey toward becoming a competent wildlife carer under WRAPT’s structured training pathway.
